Calanais Standing Stones

Calanais Standing Stones

The Calanais Standing Stones are located on the Isle of Lews in the Outer Hebrides. They are an extraordinary cross-shaped setting of stones that were erected around 5,000 years ago and predate England’s famous Stonehenge monument.

The stones were erected in the late Neolithic era and they were a focus for ritual activity during the Bronze Age. They are situated on a low ridge above Loch Roag and they have the hills of Great Bernera as a backdrop. Numerous other ritual sites lie within a few kilometres away.

Now managed by Historic Environment Scotland the site also has a visitor centre with an exhibition, cafe and shop. There are thirteen stones with a monolith near the middle. Between the central and the eastern monolith, there is a chambered tomb 6.4 metres long which was added at a later date. No one knows why they were erected but their best guess is that it was a kind of astronomical observatory. Strong footwear is advised for visiting the stones.
