Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum
Museum Overview
Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum is located in the centre of Great Ayton, near Middlesborough, North Yorkshire. Great Ayton is one of North Yorkshire’s prettiest villages and the museum tells the story of James Cook’s early years at the school, the village he grew up in and his adventures on the high seas.
The museum explores the methods of teaching in the 18th century. It follows Cook’s early life on the nearby farm to his important voyages and untimely death. Cook was educated in the schoolroom from 1736 to 1740. It is a family-friendly place to visit and it operates with a team of volunteers.
With the help of a Lottery Grant in 2012, the museum has been entirely refreshed and modernised. It features a reconstruction of an early 18th-century schoolroom plus a number of other exhibits.
