Carrickfergus Castle
Carrickfergus Castle is a Norman Castle located in the town of Carrickfergus, County Antrim. It is situated on the northern shore of Belfast Lough and it is one of the best-preserved medieval structures in Northern Ireland.
The castle was besieged by the Scots, Irish, English and French and it played an important military role until 1928. There has been a castle here for more than 800 years and it is now open as a visitor attraction. Inside there are a number of historical displays and you can see cannons from the 17th to 19th centuries.
You can climb to the top of the Great Tower and see the transformed Great Hall. A visit to the castle is self-guided although sometimes they have guided tours which you can pre-book. They often have additional activities for children during school holidays including craft workshops.
