Castell Henllys Iron Age Village

Castell Henllys Iron Age Village

Castell Henllys is an important archaeological site in north Pembrokeshire, Wales. It is the only place you can walk among Iron Age roundhouses that have been reconstructed on the very spot where they would have stood 2,000 years ago. The roundhouses have been authentically rebuilt with the help of archaeologists and other experts.

The history of the hill fort is brought to life by costumed guides. You are free to take a walk in their woodland and along the riverside paths including the Barefoot Trail. This is a sensory walk with eight different surfaces for walkers to feel beneath their shoeless feet. The trail begins under a willow tunnel and finishes with steps down to the river so you can clean your feet before putting your shoes back on. The trail also includes an accessible path suitable for wheelchairs and biggies.

The fort itself sits on an inland outcrop with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. In the roundhouses, there is often the chance to learn activities such as bread making. There is also a free, Castell Henllys app that has been developed to be your guide as you explore the site. The augmented reality feature will also show you what the fort would have looked like more than 2,000 years ago. It also invites you to take on challenges. There is also a play area on-site.
