Castle Cornet

Castle Cornet

Castle Cornet is located on the Channel Island of Guernsey. It is a large island castle and a former tidal island that is known as Cornet Rock or Castle Rock. The castle was an important defence and in 1859 it became one of the breakwaters of Guernsey’s main harbour.

What is there to do at Castle Cornet?

The island that the castle stands on measures about 5 acres in area. It was first fortified as a castle between 1206 and 1256 following the division of the Duchy of Normandy in 1204. There are six gateways to negotiate to get to the citadel at the top.

As well as the castle there are also four museums that you can visit during the main opening season. At noon there is often a cannon fired. The island also has a restaurant, four-period gardens, guided tours and theatrical performances in the summer months. You can explore the castle’s battlements and enjoy breathtaking views towards the other islands.

There are children’s trails to follow around the castle and activity sheets in some of the museums. Dressing up is available to wear around the castle and there are often Living History performances.
