Castle Ward National Trust
Castle Ward is a National Trust property located near Strangford, County Down. It is an 18th-century house which is Gothic in style on one side and classical Palladian on the other. The house overlooks Strangford Lough and there are gardens and wider trails to explore.
Things to do at Castle Ward National Trust
The differing styles are allegedly all because of a marital disagreement. Today you can explore the house and its historic interiors and collections. You will be able to uncover the stories of the people who once lived and worked here. You can take a self-guided tour of the house which is great for learning even more about the house’s past. You can also see below stairs where 40 members of staff would have once worked.
In the gardens, there is a formal sunken garden which has been restored based on an 1864 painting by Mary Ward. In the woodland, there is an adventure playpark. There are lots of fun challenges including a wobbly bridge, stepping stones and balancing obstacles. They also host a number of family-friendly events.
Around the estate, there are six trails to enjoy for walkers and cyclists. Make sure you check out the Clock Tower located on Castle Ward’s historic farmyard as it was the location and backdrop of HBO’s Winterfell in the Game of Thrones. The trails around the estate include an 8-mile castle boundary walk that takes you by the deer park. For horse riders, there is the 7.5-mile Castle Ward hoof trail and a countryside walk which is 2.5 miles in length.
