Castletown D-Day Centre

Castletown D-Day Centre

The Castletown D-Day Centre is located by the sea in Castletown, Portland in Dorset. It is a relatively new family-friendly museum that offers an immersive experience of a wartime dockyard in Portland.

It is an authentic recreation of the busy wartime dockyard that was once in use on the Isle of Portland during WWII. In 1944 thousands of American troops of the 5th US Corps and the US 1st Infantry embarked bound for the heavily defended beaches, of Nazi-occupied Europe.

There is an impressive range of original artefacts from WWII including weapons and wartime vehicles. There is a full-size replica of a Spitfire and there is even a restored Sherman tank. Visitors are encouraged to handle the weapons, climb on their vehicles, learn more through interactive displays and even dress up in authentic uniforms.
