Clifton Observatory
The Clifton Observatory and cave are located in the Clifton Downs area of Bristol. It is a historic windmill which was built in 1766 and an observation tower with picturesque views.
What is there to do at Clifton Observatory?
It is an iconic landmark and an integral part of the Bristol landscape. The observatory has a rich history and it is home to many secrets. In the tower, there is a museum which looks at the rich history of the site from when a Celtic fort once stood on the hill to when the Bristol School of artists used the site to observe and depict the landscape. There are three floors to the museum and on the top floor is their famous Camera Obscura.
The Camera Obscura is one of just three of its kind working in the UK. It has been here since 1828 and you will be able to enjoy 360-degree views of Bristol. You can also adventure down into the depths of the Avon Gorge and visit the home of Bristol’s infamous giants, Goram and Ghyston.
It is a natural cave in the limestone face which can now be accessed from inside the Clifton Observatory. The tunnel leading down is 200 feet long and you can enjoy breathtaking views and a truly unique perspective of the suspension bridge. It is a narrow walk with steep steps and low ceilings. It is not suitable for dogs, children under 4 and those with mobility issues or claustrophobia. There are also plans to restore the Clifton Rocks Railway.

Full access for adults is £5 and for children aged 4-14 is £2.50.

There is no on-site parking. On-street parking is available near the Observatory in Clifton Village and the Clifton & Durdham Downs.

Dogs are welcome on the rooftop, in the café and in the tower, but not in the cave.
