Compton Castle
Compton Castle is a National Trust property located near Compton in Devon. It has been home to the Gilbert family for nearly 600 years and it is a dramatic fortified manor house with towers, high curtain walls and a portcullis.
What can you do at Compton Castle?
It is a rare surviving example of a fortified medieval house. Inside you can look around the grand interiors with a Great Hall and a Sub Solar. You can learn more about the lives of the people that once lived there and the people that live there today.
The Sub Solar was originally a cellar. In 1450 it was transformed to make a comfortable new room. There is a medieval kitchen which is in a separate building. The garden at Compton is small but pretty with lawns, orchards, a rose garden and a knot garden.
