Crathes Castle
Crathes Castle is a National Trust for Scotland property located in Crathes near Banchory, Aberdeenshire. It is situated against a backdrop of rolling hills and set within some glorious gardens.
The castle was built in the 16th century and was home to the Burnetts of Leys family for almost 400 years. Inside there are painted ceilings, family portraits, towers and a maze of turrets. Within the grounds, there are six waymarked trails to choose from. There is a rich variety of wildlife to spot including roe deer, red squirrels, woodpeckers, buzzards and herons.
There is also the fantastic Wild Wood adventure Play area which was inspired by the stories and the setting of the castle. It is surrounded by towering trees and there is the Green Lady’s tower to conquer, a rock face challenge and a zip wire. Plus slides, sandpits, high-level walkways and a see-through walkway.
