Culloden Battlefield
Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre are located at Culloden Moor near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. It was once the site of a bloody last battle of the Jacobite rising and the visitor centre includes an interactive exhibition.
Things to do at Culloden Battlefield
It is a powerfully emotive and atmospheric battlefield where the 1745 Jacobite rising came to a tragic end. The site is now maintained by the National Trust for Scotland. In the visitor centre, you are immersed in the battle using a 360-degree projection that puts you right in the heart of the action.
You will be able to discover the true story from both the Jacobite and Government perspectives in the museum where weapons and unique artefacts are displayed. From the roof garden, you can enjoy panoramic views and see the restored 18th-century Leanach cottage. This is a traditional thatched cottage that has been recently restored. You should hopefully be able to spot Highland cows grazing on the battlefield.
Today you can walk along the battle lines and see the graves of the soldiers beside the memorial cairn in the centre of the battlefield. The site is the resting place of 1,500 Jacobite and 50 Government soldiers who fought and died there in 1746. Flags represent the front lines of both armies and show the vast scale of the battle.
