Dolaucothi Gold Mines

Something a bit different for the National Trust is the Dolaucothi Gold Mines in Pumsaint, South Wales. The gold mines date back to Roman times and there are guided underground tours plus you can have a go at panning for gold. It is the only known Roman gold mine in the UK.
The goldmines are set amid a wooded hillside of the Cambrian mountains overlooking the beautiful Cothi Valley. The Romans once mined here 2,000 years ago and the harsh mining environment continued into the 19th and 20th centuries ending in 1938. Guided tours take you back to experience the conditions underground in the Roman workings. The underground tours involve steps and steep slopes. Appropriate outerwear and a good pair of shoes are essential.
Also on-site there is a 1930s mine yard containing buildings and machinery dating from that time. Dolaucothi also offers walking trails to suit everyone with several of their walking routes starting from the woodland car park located near to the mine yard. Walking trails can be downloaded from their website. Walks include the Dolaucothi Parkland walk which is a gentle one-mile stroll. Plus an estate trail, woodland trail and a Miners way trail. You can also have a go at gold panning and take the opportunity to experience the frustrations of searching for real gold.
