Doune Castle

Doune Castle

Doune Castle is located in Doune, Stirlingshire. It was a medieval stronghold and is situated on a wooded bend where the Ardoch Burn flows into the River Teith. It was originally built in the 13th century before being rebuilt in its present state in the late 14th century.

The castle deteriorated through the 18th century and became a roofless ruin. Since the timber roofs have been replaced and the interiors including the panelling in the Lord’s Hall were installed. As well as being able to explore the interior of the castle the grounds are also worth exploring. There is a woodland walk, a Roman Fort and a new pedestrian bridge.

There is a striking keep-gatehouse and the castle has been heavily featured in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It was also used for the castle known as Winterfell in the pilot of the award-winning TV series Game of Thrones as well as Castle Leoch in Outlander.
