Drum Castle Garden and Estate

Drum Castle Garden and Estate

Drum Castle is a National Trust for Scotland property located in Drumoak near Banchory, Aberdeenshire. It is one of Scotland’s oldest tower houses and for centuries it was the seat of the chief of Irvine.

The original 13th-century tower of Drum Castle is said to be the work of medieval architect Richard Cementarius and is believed to be one of the three oldest tower houses in Scotland. A large wing was added in 1619 and further alterations were made during the Victorian era.

In the grounds, you can take a walk through the Old Wood of Drum and see the oak trees that date back to the 1700s. There is also an exquisite 16th-century chapel and a garden of historic roses. Hidden in the woodland there is a natural playground with a willow tunnel, a snakes and ladders trail, a wooden drum kit and more. There are also a couple of 40-minute walks to enjoy around the grounds.

In the castle, you can climb the steep steps to the battlements where you can enjoy some stunning views over the estate and beyond. There are guided tours around the castle where you can learn all about its history through to the present day.
