Dumfries Museum

Dumfries Museum

Dumfries Museum is located in the centre of Dumfries. It is a treasure trove of history and the museum tells the story of the land and people of the region. The museum is the largest in the region.

There are fossil footprints that were left by prehistoric animals to see, the wildlife of the Solway and tools and weapons from our earliest people. You can see stone carvings by Scotland’s first Christians and the everyday things of the Victorian farm, workshop and home.

The museum hosts a number of special exhibitions, events and family-friendly activities throughout the year. There is also the world’s oldest working Camera Obscura within the museum weather permitting. This has a charge for entry and is only accessible by steps. It offers a complete 360o panorama of the surrounding landscape.
