Things to do at Drumlanrig Castle review

Drumlanrig Castle is located in Thornhill, Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland. It is a category A listed castle and it is home to the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry. The ‘Pink Palace’ was constructed between 1679 and 1689 from distinctive pink sandstone and it is an example of late 17th-century Renaissance architecture.

The castle has 120 rooms, 17 turrets and four towers. You can’t see all of the rooms but there are many waiting to be explored. From the grand reception rooms to the magnificent staircases, cosy parlours and ornate period features. The rooms are home to stunning paintings, tapestries and objects d’art. You need to book a guided tour to explore the castle.

The gardens are beautiful and there are several way-marked trails ranging from 2km to 5km that follow the original paths built during the Victorian era. They will lead you through a variety of habitats and features that make Drumlanrig so unique, you may even spot a red squirrel. walks include a lock walk, enchanted forest, castle view walk and more.

Kids will love the chance to burn off some energy in their woodland adventure playground. There is a tower with a metal tube slide that soars 13 metres up into the trees. There is a second tunnel slide, a suspension bridge, a 2m access platform and a climbing net plus a new 6m high space net.
