Elham Valley Railway Museum
Museum Overview
The Elham Valley Railway was a hidden gem that we visited on a whim after seeing its sign whilst on our way to Walmer Castle. A quick Google later and we headed there on our way home. We probably spent a couple of hours at the railway and I would have spent longer looking at the exhibits if the children hadn’t been so fixated on the other attractions!
The visit begins with purchasing your tickets at George’s Barn. Inside you can find out about the history of the Barn and see a range of farming implements and homeware. There is also a craft section to the Barn which allows you to watch a range of crafting such as wood carving and flower arranging. Items are also available to purchase.
A short walk along the Tangled Trail and you arrive at the railway museum. There is also an engine and a signal box that children (and adults) can go in. There are model railway displays and information about the construction of the nearby Eurotunnel.
The main attraction for us was the miniature train ride. There is an extra charge for this but it was well worth it (we had to go on twice!) as it was so lovely with things to spot on your way around. In summer their garden area is beautifully tranquil to enjoy refreshments. The staff were all pleasant and helpful, engaging with the children and full of information about other local places of interest.
