Elizabeth Castle
Elizabeth Castle is an island fortress located in St Aubin’s Bay in St Helier, Jersey. It is situated on a tidal island and is open to visitors.
What is there to see at Elizabeth Castle?
The castle was first built in the 16th century because the invention of the cannon meant that the existing stronghold at Mont Orgueil was insufficient to defend the island and the port of St Helier. The castle is named after the once Queen of England, Elizabeth I, she was the queen at around the time the castle was built.
Access to the castle is via a causeway from St Helier at low tide, or on a castle ferry. There are also wading vehicles which can reach the castle regardless of tide height, although they are weather permitting. A one-way trip when the tide is high takes about 15 minutes.
The castle has many historical displays in the regimental museum. Plus there is a museum holding several pieces from the 19th century and earlier. You can climb the battlements that date back to the 1590s or explore the grounds which once gave refuge to King Charles II during the English Civil War.
There are also bunkers on-site which were re-fortified to command the sea approaches to Jersey during WWII. You can also see the hermitage where St Helier is thought to have lived around 550 AD. The castle has rooms you can explore plus a number of passageways. You can take in some breathtaking views and there is an Elizabeth Castle App available from Google Play or the Apple App Store that provides a guided tour of the castle. They also have volunteer guides that you can take a tour with.
