Fleet Air Arm Museum
Museum Overview
The Fleet Air Arm Museum is a large museum dedicated to the history of British naval aviation near Ilchester in Somerset. It has an extensive collection of military and civilian aircraft, aero engines and more. The attraction is award-winning and is an all-weather family-friendly attraction.
There are four large halls that house their exhibits. Each of the halls has two levels that tell the stories of naval aviation. They start with the first manned kites towed behind naval vessels, to helium-filled airships, seaplanes, b-planes, the carrier-borne aircraft of WWII plus modern sea harriers and helicopters.
There is a huge number of aircraft to see including the first British-built Concorde. In one of the halls, there is a room that has been converted into a mock-up of the fleet carrier HMS Ark Royal. You begin with a simulated helicopter ride to the carrier, then enter the flight deck with aircraft on display and then two large screens showing take-offs and landings of aircraft.
In hall two there are jets you can sit in and as they are based on an active Royal Navy airfield you will hopefully be able to watch real aircraft take off. They also have indoor viewing points. The museum also has a fantastic new outdoor play area. Kids can play onboard a giant aircraft carrier, they can swing, climb and slide in a 60ft themed play area. This area has been based on the new aircraft carrier HMS Elizabeth.
