Furness Abbey

Furness Abbey is located near Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria. It is a ruined abbey that is maintained by English Heritage. It is a former Catholic monastery that dates back to 1123 and was once the second-wealthiest and most powerful Cistercian monastery in the country, behind Fountains Abbey. The abbey contains a number of individual Grade I listed buildings and it is a Scheduled Monument.

Today you can explore the impressive ruins including much of the east end and west tower of the church. Plus the ornately decorated chapter house and the cloister buildings. There is a permanent exhibition of stone carvings and effigies in the visitor centre. The grounds have plenty of room for children to run and play.

Free for members of English Heritage. Adults are £7.80, children 5-17 £4.70, under 5 are free and family tickets are available.
