Glastonbury Abbey

Glastonbury Abbey

Glastonbury Abbey is located in the heart of Glastonbury, Somerset. It is now a ruined monastery which is a grade I listed building and a scheduled ancient monument.

The Abbey was founded in the 8th century and later enlarged in the 10th century. It was then destroyed by a major fire in 1184 but was later rebuilt and it became one of the richest and most powerful monasteries in England. It was then made a ruin during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

From at least the 12th century the Glastonbury area has been associated with the legend of King Arthur. This association was promoted by medieval monks who asserted that Glastonbury was Avalon, a mythical island featuring in the Arthurian legend and also status as the earliest Christian foundation link in Britain plus the Burial Place of King Arthur. Today you can explore the tranquil settings with 36 acres of grounds. They also run town tours, special events, and more. An accredited museum showcases items from the abbey’s history.
