Harlech Castle is a Grade 1 listed medieval fortification built on a rocky knoll close to the Irish Sea in Harlech, North Wales. It was built by Edward I during his invasion of Wales between 1282 and 1289. There are many castles in Wales with some spectacular settings but the location of this castle is incredible. It is thought of as the most spectacular of any of Edward I’s castles in North Wales.
The castle was completed in just seven years with a classic walls-within-walls design making it a daunting defensive castle. Harlech is easier to reach today than 600 years ago with a floating footbridge at the entrance.
Today the castle is largely a ruin although the fortress’s massive inner walls and towers still stand almost to their full heights. You can walk along some of the battlements and enjoy some truly panoramic views extending from the dunes at its feet to Snowdonia in the distance. There is plenty of exploring to do be done at Harlech Castle.
