Hedingham Castle

Hedingham Castle

Hedingham Castle is located in the village of Castle Hedingham, Essex. It is thought to be one of the best preserved Norman keeps in England.

Things to do at Hedingham Castle

Today only the major medieval structure has survived, less two turrets. The original castle and outbuildings were built around 1100 and the keep around 1140. Although it is now a popular wedding venue they are also open to day visitors.

This majestic castle stands in the heart of its ancient ramparts and medieval park, which have evolved into beautifully landscaped gardens, privately owned by the Lindsay family. The castle provides a magical backdrop for all-year-round events. Events include theatre and outdoor cinema, medieval jousts, vintage fairs and car shows, living history, educational opportunities and more.

You can enjoy entry to the historic gardens and the keep of Hendingham. There are various walks to follow around the estate. The grounds encompass over 1000 years of defensive ramparts, medieval husbandry, classical sweeping landscapes and romantic gardens. There are views over Essex from the motte and bailey and a wonderful lime avenue by the lake. Picnics are welcome, bring some garden games and a picnic and enjoy a day out on the historic estate.
