Helmsley Castle

Helmsley Castle

Helmsley Castle can be found in the heart of the North Yorkshire market town of Helmsley. It is a relatively large castle compared to others in the area. It is maintained and owned by English Heritage.

What is there to do at Helmsley Castle?

Helmsley Castle has a 900-year history and you can discover how it has evolved over the centuries. It started life as a medieval fortress, then a luxurious mansion, to a Civil War stronghold and then a romantic Victoria ruin. Although a lot of the castle still remains intact today, there are lots to see and explore.

In the large mansion house, there are lots of hands-on exhibits that kids will love. You can also pick up an audio tour if you’d like to learn even more about the castle. You can even walk from here to Rievaulx Abbey, another English Heritage property. You can also see cannonballs from the Civil War, early tableware and other interesting artefacts found at the site.

There is also a ruined keep that you can walk around inside (but not up) and if you keep walking to the far side of the castle and walk over a bridge (over the old moat) you will come across some archer statues which kids will love to see.
