Museum Overview
The Highland Folk Museum is located in Newtonmore in the Scottish Highlands. At the museum you can step back in time and experience life in the Highlands from the 1700s to the 1950s. It was Britain’s very first open-air museum.
On-site there are over 35Historical, buildings for you to explore and discover. You can learn how people once lived, worked, went to school and enjoyed their leisure time.
You will learn how homes were once built, how they dressed and more in the one-mile-long, 80-acre site. Live actors and restored buildings help bring Highland history to life. It is located in a beautiful setting and is home to red squirrels. Families can spend a number of hours on-site exploring the museum. There is a picnic area plus play areas, a cafe and shops.
