Houghton Mill and Waterclose Meadows are maintained by the National Trust. They are located in Houghton, Cambridgeshire and the mill is the last surviving mill on the River Great Ouse able to produce stone ground flour from a water-powered wheel.

What is there to do at Houghton Mill?

It is an impressive 18th-century watermill made of brick and wood and it is several storeys high. They are open for guided tours and the Meet the Millers experience. Pre-booking of the guided tours is essential, these take place on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. No pre-booking is necessary for the self-led Millers experience which runs every Sunday.

Houghton Mill is a lovely family-friendly day out. You can enjoy cycling or a boat trip along the river. There are canoes, rowing boats and punts available to hire for most of the year. There are lots of activities on offer to keep all ages happy. The self-led Millers experience is interactive and it takes you on an exploration of the flour bagging and milling floors.

You can watch experienced millers at work as you experience the sights, sounds and smells of an 18th-century water mill. There are also exhibits including some interactive exhibits. You can even buy a bag of flour to take home with you. There are several walking routes along the river, through woods and across meadows from the far side of the mill pond. There are also shorter bike trails or longer routes to the Hemingfords and St Ives for the most adventurous.

Free for members of the National Trust. Adult standard ticket £7, children £3.50, family ticket £17.50. Under 5s are free.

There is a car park this is free for members, there is a small charge for non-members.

When are they open?

They are open Wednesday-Saturday for prebooked tours and Sundays for self-led tours for most of the year. For up-to-date opening times and dates please visit their website.

Only assistance dogs are permitted inside. Dogs are welcome outside on a lead.
