Housesteads Roman Fort
Housesteads Roman Fort is an English Property site which is the remains of an auxiliary fort on Hadrian’s Wall at Housesteads, Northumberland.
What is there to do at Housesteads Roman Fort?
The fort was built around AD 124 soon after the construction of the wall began. The site is set high on a dramatic escarpment and a visit here will take you back to the time of the Roman Empire. You can wander the remains of the barrack blocks and the hospital including the oldest toilets you will ever see.
There are some panoramic views to enjoy including Hadrian’s Wall itself. During the school holidays, their knowledgeable volunteer guides lead tours around the site. The site is the most complete example of a Roman Fort in Britain and it is the best place to see many of the original features of a Roman Fort.
On-site there is also a museum where you can explore what life was like. There is a film that brings the fort back to life and some fascinating Roman finds that have been excavated from the fort. Children can dress up as a soldier and they will love running wild and exploring.
