Inveraray Jail

Inveraray Jail

Inveraray Jail is located in the town of Inveraray, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. You will be able to experience one of the finest and best-preserved jails and courtroom complexes in the world.

The prison was in use from 1820 to 1889 and the building is now a living museum and it is a category A listed building. You can experience what life was like for the men, women and children, some as young as seven, who were tried and locked up here. You can explore the atmospheric buildings at your leisure and meet costumed characters who animate the past in this unique living museum.

Your visit starts in the Torture, Death and Damnation exhibition which reveals many of the gruesome forms of punishment that were used in the 19th century. In the old prison, you will walk the narrow corridors, see the cramped overcrowded cells and witness how young children were kept in cells alongside lunatics.

In the spectacular county courtroom, you can take a seat alongside mannequins and hear extracts from actual trials that were held in the room over 150 years ago. You can also explore the new prison that was built in 1848. There are hammocks and wooden beds which you can try out. You can even turn the crank wheel and get strapped onto the whipping table. The jail is brought to life even more with their audio guide which you can download to your smartphone or borrow one of their free, handsets.
