Inverewe Garden Estate

Inverewe Garden Estate

The Inverewe Garden and Estate is located near Poolewe in the Scottish Highlands. It is a heritage botanical garden that contains species from across the globe. First created in 1862 from barren land by Osgood Mackenzie on the 850-hectare estate that was bought for him by his mother. His vision was to grow as many exotic plants as possible. The garden and estate are now the property of the National Trust for Scotland.

You can explore the garden of experimentation and wonder and learn more about the father and daughter who created this lochside garden. Hopefully, you will spot some of Scotland’s Big 5 in wildlife as there are red squirrels, red deer, otters, seals and perhaps even a golden eagle.

They often offer wildlife boat trips which are worth enquiring about when you arrive. Or you can pre-book on one of their 1-2 hour cruises on 01445 721950 to secure your place. Skipper Jamie has years of experience and he will give you an amazing insight into the local marine environment. It’s a great way to hopefully spot some seals. These trips run in the summer months.

Inverewe House now has a museum inside and an art gallery which are worth exploring. There is a network of paths for you to explore at your leisure. The Pinewood circular trail is low-level and takes around 45 minutes. There is also the Kernsary Path which is an 8-mile circular walk through some of the most beautiful wild scenery in Scotland.
