Killhope Lead Mining Museum

Museum Overview
The Killhope Lead Mining Museum is located in Cowshill near Bishop Auckland, County Durham. It is a multi-award-winning 19th-century mining museum located in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
You can explore the site and the exhibition halls. You can even accompany one of their guides on a mine tour. The site is home to the UK’s largest collection of Spar boxes. These unique works of art are made of crystals and minerals that have been found by the lead miners while they worked underground.
They recommend that you dress warmly, even in the summer and wellies are recommended for the mine trips. On the mine trips, you will be underground for about 45 minutes and places are limited so arriving early and booking a time slot is advisable. Children can join the mine tours from the age of 4. There is also a playground on-site.
