Landguard Fort

Landguard Fort

Languard Fort defends the approach to Harwich Harbour just outside of Felixstowe in Suffolk. The site opposed its final seaborne invasion by the Dutch in 1667. The fort that stands today was built in the 18th century and modified in the 19th century with substantial additions of outside batteries. The fort is maintained by English Heritage. It was disarmed and closed in 1956 and is now open to the public.

What is there to do at Landguard Fort?

Guided tours and audio tours of the fort are supplemented by an audio-visual presentation of the site’s history. They hold a number of annual events, including reenactment days. Within the fort, you can discover the rich military and maritime heritage of the fort while exploring the rooms and passageways.

If you are feeling energetic you can climb up the Harwich Bastion for wonderful views across the Port of Felixstowe. The Felixstowe museum is housed in the neighbouring 1878 built Submarine mining establishment. Here the collection of artefacts bring alive the military and social history of the town. You can visit here after looking around the fort (English Heritage members are entitled to a 20% reduction on ticket prices to the museum). The site is situated on the Landguard peninsula. It is a designated Nature Reserve with paths and an accessible boardwalk.
