Lincoln Castle

Lincoln Castle

Lincoln Castle is situated at the top of the city of Lincoln and overlooks the surrounding countryside for a number of miles. It is located opposite Lincoln Cathedral which is well worth a visit and you can purchase combined tickets for the two attractions.

What is there to do at Lincoln Castle?

Lincoln Castle is a Norman castle constructed in the late 11th Century by William the Conqueror. The original wooden structures within the castle are gone now but what remains today are the renovated castle walls which you can now walk on plus a prison which was built in 1787 and the Magna Carta.

You can walk the entire way around the medieval wall walk. Where you can’t walk on the old walls they have added additional steps and walkways. It’s a great thing to do and you will be rewarded with some wonderful views. There’s even a tall tower to climb if you can. This isn’t essential to getting around. The walk is a third of a mile long.

There is a purpose-built room which houses the 1215 document the Magna Carta. It was an agreement to a charter of liberties that changed history forever. There is also a 210-degree widescreen cinema that plays a film on a loop about King John and the birth of the Magna Carta.

The prison is the highlight of a visit to Lincoln Castle. Most of the old prison cells now house interactive exhibits which are great for children. The prison looks very much like it would have looked back when it was in use in Victorian times. The prison chapel is well worth a visit. With its segregated booths, it is like no chapel you will have seen before. Lincoln Castle hosts many great events, throughout the year. It is worth checking their website to find out what’s on.
