Llanfair Slate Caverns

The Llanfair Slate Caverns are located near Harlech in Gwynedd. Grab a torch and helmet and descend on a self-guided tour of these man-made caverns. The slate found in this mine is found in veins between layers of ancient Pre-Cambrian rocks and they are among the oldest in the world.
Cavern No. 1 has an impressive overhead entrance. Here the last sunlight streams in before descending Jacobs Ladder. The tunnels and caverns you will see were man-made over 100 years ago with only a candle for lighting.
When you emerge from the caverns you will have a breathtaking view of Cardigan Bay. There are nine caverns in total to explore and the entrance has steps down into the caverns.
