Longstone Lighthouse Visitor Centre

Longstone Lighthouse Visitor Centre

The Longstone Lighthouse Visitor Centre is located on Longstone Rock in the outer group of the Farne Islands off the Northumberland Coast.

What is there to do at Longstone Lighthouse Visitor Centre?

To visit the lighthouse you will need to visit by boat. The lighthouse was completed in 1826 and today you can explore inside and you may be lucky enough to see the seals and possibly even their babies. The lighthouse is famous for the daring rescue of survivors of the Forfarshire shipwreck by the lighthouse keeper and his daughter, Willian and Grace Darling in 1838.

Inside the lighthouse, you can see Grace’s tiny bedroom from where she spotted the nine survivors clinging to the rocks. The lighthouse is open subject to weather conditions and operational requirements.

You can visit via the Longstone tour which includes a 30-minute tour of the inside of the lighthouse and a cruise around the Farne Islands to view the seabirds and the famous grey seal colony. There is full commentary en route and the trip lasts for approx. 2 hours. Tours are run by Golden Gate Boats. If you want to climb the tower children will need to be at least 1.1 metres tall.
