Lundy Island

Lundy Island

Lundy Island is an island off the coast of Devon in the Bristol Channel that is today owned by the National Trust and maintained by the Landmark Trust. It was once a micro nation from 1925-1969 and it is just 3 miles long and 5/8 miles wide. It has had a long and turbulent history and today just 28 people live on the island.

What can you do at Lundy Island?

Today people can visit for the day or even stay overnight in one of the Landmark Trusts properties on the island with 23 to choose from. On the island, there are 42 scheduled monuments and a clutch of listed buildings. Its isolation means its wildlife is often compared to that of the Galapagos.

Most visitors arrive via Lundy’s own ferry which is an experience in its own right. The ferry was built in 1958 and it retains many of its original features. It sails at least three times a week from either Bideford or Ilfracombe and the crossing takes about 2 hours each way. You can then allow around 4-6 hours to explore the island.

On the island you can enjoy birdwatching, walking and exploring all the local buildings and monuments. These include the remains of Bronze Age settlements, early Christian grave markers, a medieval castle, a Georgian lighthouse, a Victorian church and much more.
