Museum Overview
The Manchester Museum is located at the University of Manchester site in the city centre. The museum displays works of archaeology, anthropology and natural history. It is at the heart of the university group of neo-Gothic buildings.
Their Egyptian and Sudanese collections are one of the largest in the UK. They illustrate both everyday life and preparations for the afterlife. Important items include a collection of gilded mummy masks and realistic painting images.
There are also fossils on display including one of the most important collections of Ice Age animals, in Europe, in particular from Creswell Crags in Nottinghamshire. They also have a number of British insects on display plus a Vivarium with live amphibians and reptiles which is very unusual for a museum.
