Mary Queen of Scots Visitor Centre
The Mary Queen of Scots Visitor Centre is located in Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders. This 16th-century powerhouse tells the story of Scotland’s tragic queen and the month she spent there in 1566. The time she spent there was a turning point in her life.
On display, there are paintings, objects and textiles associated with her life and times and the cult that has grown up around her. Inside the house has been preserved to allow the story of Mary’s life to be told in an engaging way. You can find out about her ill-fated ride to Hermitage Castle to meet her adviser and future husband, the Earl of Bothwell. This resulted in her falling gravely ill and it was later noted that she had perhaps preferred to have died then as her life became a lot worse.
In the Rogues Gallery, you are introduced to individuals from her life and in the Last Letter Room you can find out her final thoughts before execution. The house sits in attractive gardens which you can look around and include pear trees that are grown in the area.
