Mary Rose Museum

Mary Rose Museum

The Mary Rose Museum is located at the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth, Hampshire. It is a historical museum run by the Mary Rose Trust and it is home to the remains of the famous ship the Mary Rose plus thousands of artefacts that were found in the shipwreck making it the largest collection of Tudor objects in the world.

Things to see at Mary Rose Museum

The Mary Rose was the flagship of Henry VIII. She served for 33 years in several wars against France, Scotland and Brittany. She sank in the Solent in 1545 with the reason for sinking remaining still a mystery today. The wreck was located in 1971 and raised in 1982.

In the museum, there are a number of galleries with the objects found on one side and the ship on the other. There are hands-on displays and after over 30 years of preservation, you can now see the ship from all angles like never before. The ship is no longer continually being sprayed so instead of peering through misted-up windows you can now get a clear view in their state-of-the-art museum.

The museum tells the stories of the men who lived, worked and died on board. There are over 19,000 artefacts on display which were recovered from the seabed. You will be able to listen to the sounds of the past, smell real Tudor smells and see the ship brought back to life with cutting-edge technology. They offer guided tours, or you can explore at your leisure. There is also an augmented reality app which immerses you in the sights and sounds of life on board.
