Mills Observatory

Mills Observatory

The Mills Observatory in Dundee, Angus is Britain’s first purpose-built public observatory which was built back in 1935. It is located in a magnificent woodland setting on the summit of Balgay Hill.

At the observatory, you can watch stars and planets through their telescopes, or admire the scenery with some spectacular treetop vistas across the silvery Tay. Inside there are some fascinating space exploration and astronomical displays, planetarium shows and a fully computerised telescope that can detect 30,000 objects in the sky.

The planetarium is based around a Viewlex Apollo projector which stimulates the night sky with around 1,000 stars onto a domed roof. On the hill, there is an outdoor planet trail featuring scale models of the Solar System.
