Mount Stewart National Trust
Mount Stewart is a National Trust property located near Newtownards, County Down. It is a 19th-century house with gardens and it is situated on the east shore of Strangford Lough. You can explore the house which is home to a world-class collection of paintings and many other significant items. The house is steeped in history and you can see the dining room, grand halls, sitting rooms, the family chapel and more.
Things to do at Mount Stewart National Trust
The estate is home to ten miles of walking trails which take you through a landscape of woodlands and mixed farmland. If you’re lucky you might be able to spot some red squirrels from their Squirrel hide.
The gardens themselves are considered as one of the most outstanding gardens in the world. There are a number of themed areas in the gardens including a Sunken garden, a Spanish garden, an Italian garden, a rose and walled garden, the Dodo terrace and more.
Also within the grounds, there is a natural play area which is themed on the adventures and creatures that are found in the book – The Magic Inkpot. Trails around the estate include a 0.6-mile-long lake walk, a 1.5-mile red trail with an abundance of wildlife and a 1-mile-long red squirrel trail.
