Museum Overview
The Museum of Somerset is located in the great hall of Taunton Castle in Taunton, Somerset. It tells the county’s story from prehistoric times to the present day.
Inside the 12th-century castle, you will find contemporary gallery spaces. There are nine themed galleries to explore each with its own distinctive character with something for everyone to discover. Plus there is also the Somerset Military Museum.
Must-see exhibits include the skull of the Banwell Bear which was found in a cave in Mendip. There is the Low Ham Roman mosaic from the 4th century AD. A large collection of 17th-century cauldrons, some shoes worn by a man who was seven feet four inches tall and so much more. They also run a range of events, including toddler story times, family-friendly events, talks and tours of the town. You can also join one of their regular tours of Taunton Castle.
