National Roman Legion Museum
Museum Overview
The National Roman Legion Museum is located in Caerleon, near Newport, Monmouthshire. It is free to visit and at the museum, you can step back in time and explore life at what was once a far-flung outpost of the mighty Roman Empire. The museum lies inside what remains of the fortress. The ruins include the most complete amphitheatre in Britain and the only remains of a Roman Legionary barracks on view anywhere in Europe.
In AD 75 the Romans built a fortress at Caerleon that guarded the region for over 200 years. You can learn what made the Romans a formidable force and how life wouldn’t have been the same without them. There are exhibitions and artefacts that show us how they lived, fought, worshipped and died.
Outside you can enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of their Roman Garden. At weekends and school holidays, children can step back in time in their full-sized barrack room. They can try on replica armour and experience the life of a Roman soldier. You can download an app to enjoy an audio discovery tour or borrow an iPad from the museum shop.
