Nenthead Mines
The Nenthead Mines are located in Nenthead near Alston in Cumbria. The remote valley is covered by remains from the lead and zinc mining industry and at the site, you can see how people worked in times past.
The site is famous for its geology and the rare plants that grow on the metal-rich mine dumps. Most of the valley is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The conserved buildings on the site include a small museum and an interpretation display. There is a network of paths and trackways to explore.
On their open days, their mines are open to visitors. A trip down the Carrs Mine takes about 90 minutes and lamps and helmets are provided. The temperature underground is around 8oC so please dress appropriately. Trips are offered from April to October.
