Nine Ladies Stone Circle are located out in the Derbyshire countryside near Bakewell. They are a small early Bronze Age stone circle traditionally believed to depict nine ladies turned to stone as a penalty for dancing on a Sunday.

Things to do at Nine Ladies Stone Circle

Despite the name, there are 10 stones within the circle, the tenth has fallen and now lies flat. The stone circles are thought to date back to the Bronze Age about 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. For families with little legs, the stones are a short walk from the village of Birchover.

The Nine Ladies stand on the northern end of Stanton Moor which is an area of heathland in the Peak District. The site is managed by the Peak District National Park Authority. The site can be accessed via a number of footpaths depending on your starting point. You will pass through fields and woodland with gates, stiles and uneven surfaces which can be challenging for wheelchair users or buggies.

Why not make a day of it and visit two other nearby prehistoric sites? Arbor Low is a Neolithic henge, six miles to the west. Hob Hurst’s House is a burial chamber three miles to the North East. Both benefit from beautiful moorland views.

Dogs are welcome but must be kept under close control as there may be animals, grazing.
