Norwich Castle Museum
Museum Overview
Norwich Castle Museum is a medieval royal fortification located in the city of Norwich, Norfolk. It has had a long history including its use as a gaol from 1220 to 1887. In 1894 the Norwich museum moved to the castle. Today the museum and art gallery have many significant objects from the area including works of art, archaeological finds and natural history specimens.
The museum is currently undergoing a £15m National Lottery Heritage Fund redevelopment. When this is finished you will be able to explore more of the 900-year-old Castle which is currently closed during this time.
Currently, you can explore a large gallery complex which has been converted from the City’s Victorian prison. You can find out more about the story of Boudica and the Romans, there is a small collection of items from Egyptian culture and fine art pieces from the 17th to 20th centuries. Plus decorative arts, an area dedicated to the Royal Norfolk Regiment and an area currently being updated telling the stories of the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.
When works are completed you will once again be able to explore the medieval castle, dungeons and battlements and a couple more of their galleries.
