Museum Overview

The Oxford University Museum of Natural History is located in the centre of Oxford. Also known as the Oxford University Museum it displays many of the universities natural history specimens.

Established in 1860 with the aim of drawing together scientific studies from across Oxford. Highlights include the world’s first scientifically described dinosaur, Megalosaurus Buckalndii and the world-famous Oxford Dodo which is the only soft tissue remains of the now-extinct dodo.

The museum has over seven million historical and modern specimens from the natural world. There are insects, fossils, rocks, minerals and zoological specimens. There is a fascinating parade of skeletons in the main court, a 4.5 billion-old meteorite, beautiful gemstones, a wall of trilobites and more.

The Pitt Rivers Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology adjoins the museum building and both places can be enjoyed in a single trip. The Pitt Rivers Museum displays the archaeological and anthropological collections of the university.
