Painshill
Painshill is an 18th-century landscape with follies, grottoes and a waterwheel located in Cobham, Surrey. It was originally created by Charles Hamilton as a living painting.
Things to do at Painshill
It is a style of landscape design that has been described by an architectural historian as “Britain’s greatest contribution to the visual arts”. It’s a great day out for all the family that is full of heritage, beauty, adventure and outdoor fun.
Around the grounds, you will find some wonderful follies including a temple that was designed to house a statue of Bacchus. Plus a second wonderful ten-sided Gothic Temple where you can admire one of the best views in Surrey. When King George III visited he declared that the view from here was his favourite view.
There is a beautiful Turkish tent where you can pause a while to enjoy the view, a 14-acre picturesque lake which has a two-mile paved accessible route and a hidden Hermitage. Don’t miss the stunning Crystal Grotto which is a highlight to a day out here. There is also a ruined abbey and a Gothic tower. This is not open all year round but when it is you will be rewarded with some wonderful views.
