Pembroke Castle

Pembroke Castle

Pembroke Castle is a stunning medieval castle in Pembroke, South Wales. The castle was originally the family home of the Earldom of Pembrokeshire. It is a Grade 1 listed building. The first castle was built on the site in 1093. It was later rebuilt in stone with most of the structure still remaining today.

The castle is situated on a strategic rocky promontory of the Milford Haven waterway. The castle was left abandoned and largely ruined although its ruins have been greatly restored since its demise in 1880. The castle is dominated by the complex gatehouse on the outside and the huge circular keep on the inside. The keep is 5 storeys high with an intact domed roof. There are historical displays within the rooms of the gatehouse.

At the castle, you can also see Wogan’s Cavern which is a large subterranean cave under the castle that is accessed by a tight spiral staircase. There is a maze of tunnels to explore plus many stairs, towers and battlements. If you want to extend your visit there is a circular path that goes around the outside close to the millpond. They also host a number of annual family-friendly events.
