Portland Basin Museum

Portland Basin Museum is located in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester. The museum is situated in a restored building and includes a recreated 1920s street and local industrial heritage displays.

Museum Overview

The building is a restored nineteenth-century Ashton Canal Warehouse. The sights and sounds of bygone Tameside are brought back to life in the 1920s street. You will find the kitchen, parlour, back yard and outside toilet of a typical two-up two-down terrace house. Plus there is a schoolroom, fish and chip shop, pawnbroker, grocer’s shop, chapel, pub and doctor’s surgery.

Visitors can discover what life was like down the mines or on the farm. You can marvel at their historic machines and find out more about the local crafts and industries. For under 5s, there is a ‘Nuts and Bolts’ educational play area. You can also book boat trips on the canal via the Tameside Canal Boat Trust.
