Powderham Castle

Powderham Castle

Powderham Castle is situated on the outskirts of Exeter and it is a gem of a castle which is well worth visiting. It has been the Courtenay family home for over 600 years.

Things to do at Powderham Castle

When you arrive you can book yourselves on one of their guided tours. There are usually 2 daily tours which take place three times a day (staterooms tour and upstairs-downstairs). You are not allowed to take photos inside the castle. Both tours take around an hour and it’s recommended to visit early on in the day before it gets too busy. You can only look around the castle by booking one of their tours.

Other things to see include the old riding school which is now used for events, and other activities including watching a woodcarver at work. Inside the walled garden, you will find a pet corner and a play area. There is a zip wire, a play fort and lots of farm-type animals,.

If you want to walk for longer you can take a walk to the American garden or hike up the hill to the Belvedere tower. Tractor and trailer tours take place twice a day and take through their deer park and up to the tower. Powderham Castle hosts a lot of events, so do check their website before you leave home.
